International Speaker to launch Family Inclusion Network (SEQ)

Enabling parents to become leaders

The Executive Director of the Connecticut Commission for Children, and the founder of the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), Ms Elaine Zimmerman, will be the keynote speaker at the state launch of the Family Inclusion Network (SEQ).

The launch will be held in Brisbane on Monday 20 June, 2016.

Lighting a candle for the victims of family and domestic violence

As part of Domestic and Family Violence Month, a special candle-lighting ceremony will be held on Wednesday 4th May from 5.30 pm.

At least six Australian women are killed by their intimate partner every month, and this simple ceremony provides an opportunity to honour the victims.

Two of Brisbane’s most visible landmarks – the Treasury Casino and the Story Bridge – will be bathed in bright orange light over the next week as 16 Days of Activism to end Gender-Based Violence draws to a close.

Micah Projects’ Brisbane Domestic Violence Service (BDVS) is calling on the West End local community to wear something orange, and decorate their workplaces and shopfronts with orange livery, as part of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

16 Days of Activism is a UN-led, international campaign that runs from 25 November (White Ribbon Day in Australia) until 10 December (World Human Rights Day).

Local housing initiative hits the home stretch

Two and a half years ago, the 500 Lives 500 Homes collective set itself the ambitious target of assisting five hundred individuals and families to successfully make the transition from homelessness to secure, permanent housing.

The good news is that we are well on track to achieve that target, with more than 250 individuals and families now successfully housed at the half-way mark.
